volunteering

All of the cemeteries in Argyle are run by volunteers.  Volunteers are always needed, if you're interested in volunteering you can contact one of the cemetery trustees.  The Argyle Town Clerks Office can help you contact trustees for the other cemeteries.

DONATIONS

The History of Washington County, NY, Graves and Graveyards described the condition of the cemetery south of the village as "deplorable." It states this condition resulted in "a gathering of the strong men of the village for the purpose of considering the subject." (Of a new cemetery).  Thus was born the Prospect Hill Cemetery Association  It has been in existence for over 160 years, and has been served over the years by some of the most prominent people in town and village.  It is considered as a non-for-profit corporation, as is every cemetery in New York State.

Many of the former cemeteries have been taken over by their respective towns, because of the closing of churches, or lack of financial support.  The Town of Argyle maintains a number of former churches and private cemeteries.

Prospect Hill Cemetery obtains its funding from the following sources:  a yearly grant from the town; interest on investments - a modest return in a time of low interest rates; sale of lots and burials, vault storage, and burial of cremains.  These costs are in line with area cemeteries.  Proceeds from burials are offset by the expense of opening the grave.  In the past, we have received memorials.  These funds are invested.  By state law, trustees are prohibited from spending capital, relying only on interest.  Any capital fund expenditure must be approved by a judge.  This legal provision was enacted to ensure funding for the cemetery.

Our expenses and income just about balance each year.  We average about $20,000 in each category.  By careful management and sacrifice by our employee, we have been able to exist for many years.  However, needed improvements have had to be postponed.  Tree trimming and replanting, road improvement, and other tasks cannot be accomplished without your assistance.

From time to time, we have received bequests.  We would appreciate your consideration in this regard.  In addition, we would ask that you contribute any amount you deem practical so that we are able to continue our mission.  Donations may be sent to:  Victoria Anderson, Treasurer Prospect Hill Cemetery Association, 19 West Road, Fort Edward, NY 12828.
